🍜 Local food to try: You need to try Café quebra torto, Arroz Carreteiro, Feijão Tropeiro, Sobá, Sopa Paraguaia, and various fishes such as Pacu, Piranha and Pintado. But, one surprising local food I left for last: Alligator Meat. That’s exactly what you read! Get ready to eat some of the most delicious meat you’ve ever tasted!

🍹 Local drinks to try (alcoholic): Similar to many other places in Brazil, you’ll find an abundance of high-quality craft beer and Cachaça in Bonito. However, if you find yourself in Bonito, make sure to seek out “Leite de Onça” (Jaguar Milk). It’s a delightful local specialty worth trying.

Boca da Onça Trilha Discovery com Almoço (Trail and Lunch)

On arrival at the farm, you will be warmly welcomed with information about this incredible attraction and invited to enjoy a delicious breakfast. Afterward, a Tour Guide will introduce himself and give you the first instructions for this exciting activity. The group will head off in a 4×4 vehicle down the mountainside with steep descents and breathtaking views, setting off on an adrenaline-filled adventure.

This tour offers two experiences in one day. First, you will explore the first part of the trail on the banks of the Salobra River and then continue along the Adventure Trail. During the 21,000 feets (6,500 meters) of the trail, you will have the opportunity to pass 15 incredible points, including waterfalls and cascades, 9 of which are perfect for a refreshing swim.

When you return to the farmhouse, you will be served a tasty regional lunch. Afterward, you can enjoy the structure of the reception, which has swimming pools, a games room, and hammocks for relaxing.

Barra do Sucuri – Flutuação (Floating) 

During this exciting journey on the Sucuri River, known for its incredibly clear waters, visitors have the opportunity to take part in a unique floating experience. It is important to note that, although access to the source of the river is not possible, the float takes place along the course of the Sucuri River.

At the reception, visitors receive initial information and are directed to receive the essential equipment: wetsuits and shoes, masks, snorkel, and life jackets. Next, a short walk takes them to the starting point, where they receive training on the Formoso River to help them adapt to using the equipment.

Accompanied by a tour guide, the group sets off in a boat, beginning the ascent up the Sucuri River toward its source. During this 1,300-meter journey, you will have the chance to admire various species of fauna and flora in the riparian forest.

Why should you avoid tap water? While the water undergoes treatment and is deemed safe for consumption, it travels through a network of pipes across the city before reaching our taps and showers. During this journey, it can accumulate impurities like rust particles and other substances, making it unfit for direct drinking.

Brushing your teeth with tap water is generally okay, but for drinking purposes, it’s better to opt for bottled water or bring your own filtered water bottle.

It’s worth noting that many restaurants in Bonito use purified water for customers and even for making ice, ensuring your cold drinks are safe. Always inquire at the restaurant, and if in doubt, choose the bottled water option.

Additionally, considering the intense Brazilian sun, it’s crucial to stay well-hydrated. Bonito has two distinct seasons: dry and rainy, each with its pros and cons. The choice depends very much on the preferences of each tourist.

If you like waterfalls, this is the ideal time to visit, as it is the rainy season and they are full, providing a visual spectacle.

For lovers of hiking, horseback riding, biking, boating, and much more, summer in Bonito is a real wonder. The green forests become even more exuberant and the rivers more voluminous. This trip will show you a variety of activities to enjoy, so choose the season that suits you best. However, it is worth noting that there is no bad time to visit Bonito

Before I left for Bonito, I had sometimes heard that the city was expensive. This is partly true and partly not. It is true that Bonito is a very well-organized ecotourism destination with rigorous standards of maintenance and preservation of its natural beauty. Having a limit on visitors to the attractions, a high-quality infrastructure with sterilized materials and certified professional guides, among other requirements, has its costs – and they are high.

But, as travelers, we know when we can spend and when we have to save.
