Bonito TRAVEL GUIDE

Bonito Brazil: A Quick Look

There is a very special place in Brazil where even the inhabitants of their own country (Brazil) don’t believe it belongs to us. It’s a place so incredible that it’s called “Bonito” (Beautiful). And there are plenty of reasons to call it that: from marvelous caves and caverns to the world’s most crystal-clear rivers and breathtaking fauna.

Bonito has rapidly gained popularity as a tourist destination, thanks to its stunning natural beauty, well-developed tourism infrastructure, and warm hospitality. If you’re seeking a place to unwind, have fun, and connect with nature, Bonito is the perfect choice. The growth of eco-tourism has helped this location to maintain its natural beauty, and still give tourist amazing experiences.

In this Bonito travel guide, you will find everything you need to know, from pre-planning your trip to staying safe. Side note: One of the main questions we get when planning a trip to our country is “when is the best time to visit Brazil“, which you can read later.

Now back to Bonito!

When I was about 8 years old, my parents and I passed through “Bonito” very quickly. I remember asking my parents why that town had so many different things right at the entrance, such as telephone booths in the shape of arachnids, gigantic snakes, jaguars, and various other things that I had never seen before in my life. Today, 26 years on, I’m still amazed at the investment that the municipality and state have made in this very special city.

If you’re someone who loves water as much as I do, you should know that Bonito has the most crystal-clear rivers in the world. What’s more, you’ll be able to enjoy a number of exclusive adventures, getting to know a Brazil that few people know about.

I would venture to say that this destination is visited more by tourists from other countries in the high season than by Brazilians themselves. People from other countries really appreciate this stunning and unique city.

Are you ready for one of the greatest adventures of your life in Brazil’s ecotourism capital? Come with me on this travel guide on one of the most intense trips you could ever have! Let’s Rock! By the way, for an in-depth country guide, you can later see our complete Brazil travel guide.

Bonito Brazil: Quick Travel Tips Before You Go

๐Ÿ›ซ Airport: The nearest airport to Bonito is in Campo Grande, Brazil, and is called Ueze Elias Zahran International Airport. The airport code is CGR, 870 km (470 miles) from Bonito.

๐Ÿค‘ Currency: Brazilian Real, shown by the R$ symbol.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Language: Portuguese, although English is common in tourist spots and in hotels.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Time Zone: Amazonas Standard Time (GMT-4).

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Quite affordable if you are coming from a stronger currency such as the US dollar, EURO, or Yen.

๐Ÿ›œ Internet: In all honesty, it ainโ€™t as fast as being in the heart of Sรฃo Paulo, but it’s not terrible, either. It is halfway.

๐Ÿ“„ Brazil Visa: As of right now, if you are traveling from the US, Canada, Australia, or Japan, then no. This can change starting October 1, 2023. Track the status and details here. For EU Nationals, you do NOT need a visa, and you may not be affected by the Oct 1, 2023 change. You can see details here.

๐Ÿ”Œ Power Outlets: In Brazil, we have two associated plug types, C and N. Plug type C is the one with two round pins, while plug type N has two round pins and a larger grounding pin. It’s advisable to carry a universal travel adapter to ensure compatibility with these outlets during your travels.

๐Ÿ”‹Power Grid: Awesome! Brazil operates entirely on a 127/220V supply voltage and 60 Hz. Some newer hotels operate at 220V but donโ€™t count on this.

๐Ÿ“ณ Brazil SIM Card: If you are considering the necessity of a SIM card for Brazil, trust me: the answer is a loud yes. They are not expensive, and to have one in any country you travel to is a must.  Brazil’s most used SIM card operators are Tim, Claro, Oi, and Vivo.

๐Ÿš˜Car Rentals: Renting a car in Brazil can be a little overwhelming, and you can be nervous about driving abroad. However, depending on your trip, it could be the best way to get around. And remember: check your car’s air conditioning. You’ll need to use it a lot in the intense heat of Bonito.

Bonito Brazil: Safety Travel Tips (Use Common Sense)

๐Ÿ Food safety:  Food is safe pretty much everywhere. Use your common sense, though, and avoid sketchy-looking things like seafood on the streets.

๐Ÿ’งWater safety: Avoid tap water except to brush your teeth. Filtered water and ice are safe options. Restaurants usually have filters as well. Stick with filtering your water or buying bottled water to ensure safe hydration. Consider bringing a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle for convenient access to clean and safe drinking water during your travels.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ Daytime safety: In popular tourist spots, a frequent concern is small-scale theft. Here are some friendly suggestions to keep in mind: Opt for simpler attire and accessories instead of flashy designer clothes, purses, and costly jewelry (including valuable watches). Stay attentive and avoid being overly absorbed in your phone. Use your phone only when essential.

๐Ÿฆบ Nighttime safety: Use common sense like in any big city you visit. Donโ€™t put valuables in your pocket, donโ€™t walk alone at night, donโ€™t pull your phone out on the street, donโ€™t wear jewelry or watches or expensive purses, and donโ€™t use the metro at night.

๐Ÿ‘บ Avoiding scams: Safeguard your valuables by storing them securely. Purchase tickets for sightseeing tours and concerts online rather than from street vendors. Arrange taxis or Uber rides directly through official apps or your hotel. Be mindful of where you withdraw cash, opting for reputable locations like banks instead of subway stations or stores. Lastly, always keep an eye on your drink and practice responsible drinking, especially if you’re traveling solo. Safety first!

Bonito Brazil Travel Tips: A Locals Perspective

๐Ÿจ Best neighborhoods for tourists:  Centro (best central location and for nightlife), Singular (families), and Formoso (couples).

๐ŸŽ„Top Brazilian holidays and traditions: In this Travel Guide, my focus isn’t on suggesting a lively Carnival experience in Bonito, as some might anticipate. Based on my travels and numerous unique experiences in this remarkable city, I’ve had the opportunity to witness various festivals and traditions. These include the Festival de Inverno de Bonito, Festa do Peรฃo de Boiadeiro, Festa de Sรฃo Pedro, and Festival da Guavira.

๐Ÿœ Local food to try: You need to try Cafรฉ quebra torto, Arroz Carreteiro, Feijรฃo Tropeiro, Sobรก, Sopa Paraguaia, and various fishes such as Pacu, Piranha and Pintado. But, one surprising local food I left for last: Alligator Meat. That’s exactly what you read! Get ready to eat some of the most delicious meat you’ve ever tasted!

๐Ÿน Local drinks to try (alcoholic): Similar to many other places in Brazil, you’ll find an abundance of high-quality craft beer and Cachaรงa in Bonito. However, if you find yourself in Bonito, make sure to seek out “Leite de Onรงa” (Jaguar Milk). It’s a delightful local specialty worth trying.

๐Ÿง‰ Local drinks to try (non-alcoholic): Tererรฉ, Gingibirra, and Sembara are delightful beverage options in the region. One particularly surprising non-alcoholic drink is “Sembara,” a traditional indigenous beverage crafted from buriti, coconut, rapadura, sugar, and water. However, the drink I’d most frequently reach for is the refreshing “Tererรฉ,” which proves to be an excellent companion in quenching the intense heat of Bonito. Its cooling properties make it a go-to choice.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธWalkability: Wonderful! Getting around Bonito is very easy. You can walk around the urban perimeter in less than thirty minutes! However, I would like to point out in this travel guide that for your adventures, it is a good idea to have some form of transportation.

๐ŸŽ‰ Nightlife: This is definitely not the city where you’ll find Rio de Janeiro-style parties. However, you will be able to visit several bars that can make your evenings a lot of fun, thanks to the immense hospitality of the locals.

๐Ÿ˜€ Friendly to foreigners: Absolutely, Bonito warmly embraces visitors from all corners of Brazil and beyond. It’s a place where diverse cultures and backgrounds come together, enriching the experience for every traveler.

๐Ÿฅ Hospitals: There is a hospital in Bonito called “Hospital Darcy Joรฃo Bigaton,” which is highly rated by visitors.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ English speaking: You’ll be able to communicate with guides, hotel receptionists and many other people who will help you on your adventure. So yes, there are many people who understand and speak English in Bonito.

What is the Best Way to Get to Your Bonito Hotel?

The nearest airport to Bonito is in Campo Grande, Brazil, and is called Ueze Elias Zahran International Airport. The airport code is CGR, 470 miles (870 km) from Bonito. The estimated time for this trip is 3 hours and 40 minutes. Don’t worry; the road is extremely safe.

The simplest and easiest way to do it is by organizing a private shuttle. That saves you the trouble of having to organize it upon landing. But if you donโ€™t really mind, then there are a few things you can do.

You can try a taxi, but BE CERTAIN the meter is turned on to avoid scams. This is a thing to pay attention to in every country, and it is not different in Brazil. You can also hire a van to take you and your family exclusively to Bonito. This type of transportation is extremely common in Campo Grande, where you can go to various cities, both near and far.

Renting a car in Bonito is an excellent option. Rental car agencies are at the airport, making for easy pickup and drop-off. It is the way to go if you plan to drive all around or if it is more of a family trip.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: If you are planning to take an Uber, make sure that you have a Brazil SIM card so that your phone operates properly. You never want to depend on free public WIFI for using your ride-share apps.

Bonito Travel Guide

How to Get Around Bonito?

Ride Sharing: It’s not such a traditional means of transportation to get around Bonito, as it is a small city and there aren’t many ride sharing app drivers available. It is recommended that you opt for private transportation.

Rent a Car (top choice): Opting to rent a car for your Bonito adventure is a fantastic choice, offering you the freedom to explore at your own pace. With a rental car, you’ll have the flexibility to thoroughly enjoy your trip. Just remember to bring your valid driver’s license and be ready to drive on the right side of the road. Happy exploring!

Take a Taxi: In Bonito, getting a taxi is a very simple task. As in most cities in Brazil, in Bonito, there are several spots reserved for taxi drivers to wait for their passengers. But remember my tip above: ask the taxi driver to turn on the โ€œtaximeterโ€ so that you pay a fair price.

Get on a Bike: Bonioto offers fantastic opportunities for cycling enthusiasts, turning it into an exciting adventure. You’ll find numerous spots where you can easily rent different types of bikesโ€”whether you prefer a “speed” bike for smooth rides or a “mountain” bike for off-road escapades. Embrace the adventure and explore the incredible offerings of this city on two wheels!

Public Transportation: In this travel guide, I don’t recommend public transportation in Bonito. It is used by students and local workers.

When to Go to Bonito?

When planning your trip to Bonito and aiming for a seamless experience, it’s highly advisable to check the weather forecasts on reliable weather websites. Nobody wants their plans to be disrupted or canceled due to heavy rain, right?

Remember, the seasons in Bonito are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere, so plan accordingly to make the most of your visit. Stay informed and enjoy your adventure without weather-related hiccups!

Bonito Brazil Summer (December to March): During the summer in Bonito, temperatures often soar to around 86ยบF (30ยฐC), creating an ideal climate for exploring the breathtaking waterfalls of โ€œChapada dos Guimarรฃesโ€. If you’re considering a trip from Bonito to the Pantanal, it’s valuable to note that the dry season typically spans from May to September. This knowledge can greatly assist you in planning your adventures with greater ease and peace of mind!

Bonito, Summer Carnival: While Brazil is globally renowned for its vibrant Carnival celebrations, a visit to Bonito is not typically motivated by the desire to partake in Carnival festivities. The city may host smaller Carnival parties, but they pale in comparison to the grand celebrations of Rio de Janeiro. Bonito is truly a haven for adventurers and enthusiasts of exotic Brazilian cuisine, attracting those seeking unique experiences and culinary delights.

Bonito, Brazil Fall (April and May): The weather in Bonito at this time of year is incredible! The temperatures are lower at night, and the days are drier, which is great for outdoor activities. Another advantage is that the landscapes are even more beautiful with the dry leaves of the trees lying on the ground.

Bonito, Brazil Winter (June to August): The period from late fall to early spring is the time with the least rainfall in Bonito. Although the winter is cold, it doesn’t harm the floats. On the contrary: the lack of rainfall results in maximum visibility on the water. The temperature of the rivers remains around a pleasant 68ยบF (20ยฐC), and the obligatory use of wetsuits helps maintain body heat. However, it is important to note that swimming in waterfalls or spas can be challenging due to the colder water at this time of year.

Bonito, Brazil Spring (September to November): During spring, the region’s ipรชs begin to bloom, and temperatures rise, ranging from 66ยบF (19ยฐC) to 89ยบF (32ยฐC). At this time, rainfall is still scarce, which makes diving and floating trips even more special due to the greater crystallinity of the waters. It’s an ideal time to enjoy the natural beauty of Bonito with perfect weather conditions for your adventure!

Keep in mind that there is no wrong time to visit Bonito!

For those who are interested in exploring the river without doing any floating, the Rio Sucuri tour offers a pleasant boat trip. When you arrive at the starting point, you will be welcomed at the old farmhouse, where you will receive all the necessary information about the tour. The trail is very quiet, through the Sucuri River’s riparian forest, about 1,640 feets (500 meters) long, and invites you to admire the river’s main springs, as well as observe wild animals and plants native to the region. When you arrive at the river’s deck, the boat part of the tour begins, with approximately 5,900 feets (1,800 meters), giving you the opportunity to appreciate the crystal-clear waters in shades of blue, a truly special beauty. Bonito Travel: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drink the water in Bonito Brazil?

Straight from the tap is a massive NO.

In Bonito, Brazil, it’s advisable to avoid consuming unfiltered water. Even though the public supply water is treated and generally safe, it’s wise not to take any unnecessary risks.

Why should you avoid tap water? While the water undergoes treatment and is deemed safe for consumption, it travels through a network of pipes across the city before reaching our taps and showers. During this journey, it can accumulate impurities like rust particles and other substances, making it unfit for direct drinking.

Brushing your teeth with tap water is generally okay, but for drinking purposes, it’s better to opt for bottled water or bring your own filtered water bottle.

It’s worth noting that many restaurants in Bonito use purified water for customers and even for making ice, ensuring your cold drinks are safe. Always inquire at the restaurant, and if in doubt, choose the bottled water option.

Additionally, considering the intense Brazilian sun, it’s crucial to stay well-hydrated. Dehydration can potentially harm your trip, so make it a priority to keep yourself adequately hydrated, especially in the hot and sunny climate of Bonito. Try to drink about 2 to 3 liters of water daily while in Bonito.

So Steps to Stay Safe With the Water Are:

  1. In an AirBnb, boil the water if you do not have bottled water or a filter.
  2. In a hotel with no filter, buy bottled water, but this can get expensive.
  3. Never drink water directly from a river or waterfall.
  4. Get a reusable water bottle that you can refill. And since refilling is free, you donโ€™t have to worry about something so simple to solve while in Bonito, Brazil. Consider bringing a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle for convenient access to clean and safe drinking water throughout your travels.

Whatโ€™s the Bonito Weather Like?

Average min and max temperatures in Bonito, Brazil

Bonito has two distinct seasons: dry and rainy, each with its pros and cons. The choice depends very much on the preferences of each tourist.

From December to March, the heat reaches extremely high levels, reaching an incredible 104ยบF (40ยฐC), something I personally love. This heat is perfect for cooling off in a relaxing river bath. If you like waterfalls, this is the ideal time to visit, as it is the rainy season and they are full, providing a visual spectacle.

For lovers of hiking, horseback riding, biking, boating, and much more, summer in Bonito is a real wonder. The green forests become even more exuberant and the rivers more voluminous. This trip will show you a variety of activities to enjoy, so choose the season that suits you best. However, it is worth noting that there is no bad time to visit Bonito

Is Bonito Expensive?

Before I left for Bonito, I had sometimes heard that the city was expensive. This is partly true and partly not. It is true that Bonito is a very well-organized ecotourism destination with rigorous standards of maintenance and preservation of its natural beauty. Having a limit on visitors to the attractions, a high-quality infrastructure with sterilized materials and certified professional guides, among other requirements, has its costs – and they are high.

But, as travelers, we know when we can spend and when we have to save. The other part of the story is that the cost of your trip to Bonito will depend on the tours you choose to do and the time of year you visit (high or low season, prices can double during holidays such as Carnival). What’s more, your style of travel also has a lot of influence.

The more tours you choose, the more expensive the trip will be. It’s relatively easy to calculate the cost of tours, as they all have fixed prices. The tours range from U$6 (R$30) to U$260 (R$1,290) – with Abismo Anhumas being the most expensive, as it requires a more sophisticated structure and involves many safety considerations, both for visitors and for the preservation of the cave. In this travel guide, I make it clear that this city is more expensive to visit than Cuiabรก or Campo Grande, for example. But, as I’ve already mentioned, the maintenance costs are high, and the wonderful experiences you’ll have more than justify them.

Is Bonito Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Bonito is a beloved spot not only for Brazilians but also for many visitors from around the world who truly appreciate this amazing city. As a proud Brazilian, I can honestly say that I would love to visit Bonito every single year. Let me share with you some compelling reasons to explore this charming city.

How Many Days Do I Need in Bonito Brazil?

The ideal suggestion for making the most of Bonito is to dedicate at least 5 full days. I recommend in this travel guide that you rest between activities and tours for at least 2 hours. That way your body and mind will be ready for the next adventure!

With this amount of time, you can create a comprehensive itinerary to explore the main tours in Bonito, as well as take some time to discover the local attractions, restaurants, bars, and beautiful squares!

For those who don’t have so much time, it’s good to know that staying at least 4 days in Bonito is essential to make the most of the trip. That way, the experience will be enriching and memorable.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Brazil Currencyย

The official currency in Brazil is the Brazilian Real, shown by either BRL or R$. Although cards are widely accepted in popular areas and hotels, you still want to have some cash on hand. This is in case you really want to hit a street vendor for food or a painting. The worst thing is getting caught with no cash and missing that unique opportunity.

Since Brazilโ€™s official language is Portuguese, both in Bonito and all through the country, this is what youโ€™re most likely to hear in the streets.

English is widely spoken in many tourist spots and hotels, but picking up some basic Portuguese phrases can enhance your overall experience and how locals perceive you. There are plenty of guides who can communicate in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, making it easier to connect with the local culture.

If you want to learn a bit of Portuguese prior to going, DuoLingo and Pimsleur are great tools to use.

๐Ÿ›ซ Bonito Brazil Busy Season & Slow Season

Bonito Busy Season: In Bonito, Brazil, the high season is usually July and January. During these months, we see more people visiting, as it’s the school vacation period and the weather is great. The summer months (January) and the mid-year vacations (July) are when the city gets livelier and busier.

Bonito Slow Season: The low season in Bonito is usually between May and August. During this time, rainfall is less common, which can lead to a lower volume of water in the rivers and waterfalls, impacting some water activities. In addition, temperatures tend to be milder, especially at night and in the early morning.

Bonito Shoulder Season: This period takes place during spring (September to November) and fall (March to April). These months represent a transition period between the low season, which is from May to August, and the high season, which runs from December to February.

Do I Need a Visa for Brazil?ย

The Short Answer: If you are traveling from the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, the answer is no, UNTIL October 1, 2023, then the answer is yes. Currently, no visa is necessary from European Union (EU) countries. This looks like it will be the case even after October 1, 2023.ย

The Longer Answer: Traveling to Brazil is a great experience, but it is important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row so to speak. That means having the proper documentation needed to enter the country.ย

Here’s what you need to know about securing a visa for Brazil, specifically for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and European Union (EU) countries.

Section 1: US, Canada, Australia, and Japan
Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan can currently enter visa-free travel to Brazil for tourism or business purposes.ย

This applies to stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period. All you need is a valid passport with an expiry date at least six months beyond your intended departure from Brazil.

Brazil is looking to implement the visa requirement again for these four countries as of October 1, 2023, so plan in advance for this.ย

Section 2: European Union (EU)ย  Nationals

For most European Union citizens, including those from the UK, Germany, France, and Italy, also benefit from visa-free entry to Brazil.ย

This policy permits EU nationals to stay in Brazil for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. Like others, they will need a passport that is valid for at least six months past the date of entry into Brazil.

Visa and immigration requirements can and do change. It is always advised to check the latest information from the official government websites of Brazil or your home country’s foreign travel advisory services before making travel plans.

For the most recent and comprehensive information about visa requirements for all nationalities, consult the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or a Brazilian embassy or consulate near you during your pre-planning phase of your trip.ย

The October 1st, 2023 update does not look like it will affect EU Nationals, but research accordingly here.

What Do I Need on My Brazil Packing List?ย

The worst is to carry too much or forget crucial things while traveling. Overpacking can be a hassle, and missing essential items can disrupt your trip, leading to a scavenger hunt in a Brazilian mall for a travel adapter.

Packing for Brazil should be a thoughtful process, just like preparing for any other significant journey abroad. Plan in advance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure.

Here’s a list Iโ€™ve curated for this Bonito travel guide:ย

๐Ÿ”Œ Power Adapters: Brazil has types C and N outlets, which can be a hassle if you donโ€™t plan ahead. You can buy the correct adapters for your devices ahead of time to avoid scrambling around and wasting time to buy one there. Having a Power Bank with you is a real lifesaver for those crucial moments. Make sure to pack at least one in your luggage; it can be a game-changer when you need it most. Additionally, consider carrying a universal travel adapter to ensure compatibility with various outlets during your travels.

๐Ÿ“ณ Brazil and Bonito SIM Card: You know that being connected is essential, even more so when traveling abroad. Donโ€™t forget to get a Brazilian or Bonito-specific SIM card to communicate and access the internet. This is a must-have if you plan to rely on Google Maps, Uber, or similar things. Brazil’s most common SIM card operators are Tim, Claro, Oi, and Vivo..ย

๐Ÿ’ง Filterable Water Bottle: The tap water in Bonito is typically safe for general use, but it’s best to avoid drinking it. Follow my lead, and make sure to carry a water bottle with you wherever you explore! Consider investing in a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle for convenient access to clean and safe drinking water during your adventures.

๐Ÿ’Š Anti-Hangover Meds: Brazil’s nightlife is vibrant and lively! It’s a good idea to pack some anti-hangover medications to ensure a smooth trip. The last thing you’d want is to spend a whole day of your seven-day trip in bed dealing with a hangover. And yes, always remember to stay hydrated!

๐Ÿ‘’ Sun Protection: The sun in Bonito can be remarkably intense, so don’t underestimate it. Make sure to pack a high-SPF sunscreen and a sun hat to protect your skin and face. If luggage space is tight, plan to purchase these essentials locally. Your skin will appreciate the care!

๐ŸฆŸ Bug Repellent: Brazil enjoys a tropical climate, and with Bonitoโ€™s abundant greenery, mosquitoes are quite common. Whether you’re savoring a beach sunset or hiking through the forest, insect repellent is an absolute essential. Don’t leave it behind! Consider using an eco-friendly bug repellent to protect yourself while minimizing environmental impact.

๐Ÿฉด Comfortable Footwear: Donโ€™t forget you will cross many terrains here. Pack comfy shoes for walking, sandals, flip-flops, and whatever else you think is going to be necessary.

๐Ÿ“„ Travel Documents: Remember to bring your passport, visa (if needed), and travel insurance documents. It’s wise to have a few printed copies of your travel insurance in case of any unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, keep photocopies of these vital documents separately in case of loss or theft. Having these photocopies can be a lifesaver if the originals are lost. You can also keep digital copies on your phone for added convenience.

The rest of your packing list should revolve around clothing suitable for the season you intend to travel to Bonito. Customize this list based on your specific needs and planned activities. Make sure you’re prepared for the weather and the adventures you’re set to embark on!
