Campo Grande Brazil: A Quick Look

Campo Grande is your laid-back launchpad to the Pantanalโ€™s wild wonders, but this โ€˜Cidade Morenaโ€™ has its own rhythm. Thinkย tererรฉย (iced yerba mate) sipped at sunset,ย indigenous craftsย atย Feira Central, andย jacarรฉsย (alligators) lurking just beyond the cityโ€™s edge. For adventurers, itโ€™s the perfect mix of urban ease and untamed wilderness. In this Campo Grande travel guide, you will find everything you need to know, from pre-planning your trip toย staying safe.ย

Follow me and get ready to explore one of Brazil’s most vibrant and unknown spots, where you will find an incredible variety of local wildlife, all while temperatures never fall below a comfy 68ยบF (20ยบC).

One of my favorite places in Campo Grande as a nature lover is Prosa State Park, situated along the elevated Afonso Pena Avenue. This park spans 135.26 hectares (334.2 acres) and is called Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, its home. Imagine yourself walking through this enormous natural wonderland full of animals, insects, and lush vegetation.

According to the Mato Grosso do Sul Environment Institute (Imasul), the park’s primary goal is to keep parts of the Cerrado ecosystems safe since various plants and animals and the springs of the Prosa stream can only be found there. Beyond preservation, the park aims to showcase the area’s natural and cultural beauty, supporting scientific research, environmental education, recreational activities, and eco-friendly tourism.

Campo Grande, which often gets the nickname “Cidade Morena” because its earthy sandstone soil is so brown, also marks the beginning point for the Pantanal, an expansive floodplain teeming with wildlife and lush flora. But in spite of its role as the entry point to these famous destinations, the city itself is often passed over when we plan trips.

Here’s a fun fact: Campo Grande is famous for having many public parks, and that makes it a great spot for those wanting to explore a different kind of city. Mato Grosso do Sul’s capital is one of Brazil’s most forested cities. Beyond its natural beauty, Campo Grande has a massive part in preserving Pantanal culture and supporting indigenous communities.

And there is so much more to know! Join me on this adventure to the heart of Brazil’s central west!

Campo Grande, Brazil: Safety Travel Tips (Use Common Sense)

๐Ÿ Food safety: Although food is super safe, please avoid eating berries and similar while out in nature. Always ask a food expert for help identifying things.

๐Ÿ’งWater safety: Tap water in Brazil is generally safe to use for brushing your teeth and washing your hands, but it’s not recommended for drinking. Opt for filtered water and ice when consuming liquids. Most establishments provide filtered water as well. To minimize plastic waste, consider using a reusable water bottle or purchasing bottled water. Here’s a friendly tip: never drink water directly from rivers. Carrying a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle can be a smart solution to ensure access to clean water during your travels.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ Daytime safety: Campo Grande is not seen as a dangerous city, and I agree. However, there are essential precautions to take wherever you go, such as avoiding carrying your cell phone in your hand and not wearing expensive clothes. Make common sense your bestie.

๐Ÿฆบ Nighttime safety: Like in any big city you visit, be smart! Donโ€™t keep valuables in easily accessible pockets, prefer not to walk alone at night, donโ€™t pull your phone out on the street, or wear jewelry, watches, or expensive purses. Accepting rides from strangers is also a no-no; only use official transportation apps!

๐Ÿ‘บ Avoiding scams: When it comes to your valuables, keep them in a safe. Tickets for sightseeing tours and concerts should be bought online or with registered vendors, not from a street person. It is best to book Taxis or Uber from your apps and inside. Be mindful of where you withdraw your money, do it at banks and not inside subway stations or stores. And no one should leave their drink unattended or drink without moderation, especially as a solo traveler.

Campo Grande TRAVEL GUIDE

Where is Campo Grande Brazil Located?

Campo Grande Map

Campo Grande is situated in the central-eastern part of Brazil. It stands out as one of the country’s most prosperous regions, rich in Brazilian wildlife, indigenous heritage, agribusiness, and farming. Often referred to as a cultural hub and a vital agricultural hub for Brazil.

What State is Campo Grande In?

Campo Grande is the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul and is situated in the Center-West region of Brazil. Due to its reddish soil, the city has earned the nickname “Cidade Morena.” This term was coined by Archbishop Dom Francisco de Aquino Correia in the early 20th century.

Doing research for this Campo Grande Travel Guide, I found out that as of the 2018 Urban Hierarchy classification proposed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), this town is recognized as a regional capital with outstanding urban development.

Whatโ€™s the Closest Airport to Campo Grande, Brazil?

The closest airport is Ueze Elias Zahran International Airport. Its airport code is CGR. You will have a short trip of 4.97 miles (8 km) to the city center, and you can cover that easily with rideshare apps and taxis.

What is the Best Way to Get to Your Campo Grande Hotel?

Once you’ve arrived at Ueze Elias Zahran Internacional Airport (CGR) in Campo Grande, you can get to your hotel in a few ways.

The simplest, and what I consider to be the best way to have a stress-free start to your trip, is to consider a private shuttle to your hotel. Hence, itโ€™s not something to think about upon landing. But If you feel a little adventurous, then you can choose some other ways.

Pro Tip: If you plan on taking an Uber, please get a Brazilian SIM card so that your phone operates on mobile networks. Trust me, you never want to rely on free public WIFI to use ride-share apps.

In this Campo Grande Travel Guide, I wonโ€™t tell you to avoid taking a taxi but MAKE SURE the taximeter is on to avoid scams. You should do this in every country abroad, honestly. Oh, here, cabs have special colors on their license plates: blue, white, and red.

Renting a car in Campo Grande is a great option, too. Rental car places are mostly at the airport, so it is an easy pick-up. Iโ€™ll say this is a solid way to go if your plan includes driving around the city and surrounding areas. Should your planning be for a family thing, this is a great option. Driving a car will make your adventures in Campo Grande more exciting.

But if you plan to have some drinks, then I say to go for a private shuttle or Uber for safety.

This is in case you really want to hit a street vendor for food or a painting. The worst thing is getting caught with no cash and missing that unique opportunity.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Brazil Languageย

Brazil’s official language is Portuguese, so you’ll most likely hear this in Campo Grande and throughout the country.ย

English is spoken in many tourist spots and hotels, but learning basic Portuguese phrases will go a long way from an experience standpoint and a local perception standpoint. There are plenty of guides who speak Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

If you want to learn a bit of Portuguese before going, DuoLingo and Pimsleur are great tools.

๐Ÿ›ซ Campo Grande Brazil Busy Season & Slow Season

Campo Grande Busy Season: We have the driest season in Campo Grande from April to November. This makes hiking and visiting nature parks easier and attracts more people.ย

Campo Grande Slow Season: From December to March, when there is higher rainfall, which scares off most adventurers. But don’t be fooled: the rain doesn’t last all day. It rains for 1 or 2 hours at most.ย

Campo Grande Shoulder Season: From June to September, the incidence of tourists in Campo Grande is average due to low demand from the local or foreign population.

Do I Need a Visa for Brazil?ย

The Short Answer: If you are traveling from the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, the answer is no, UNTIL October 1, 2023, then the answer is yes. Currently, no visa is necessary from European Union (EU) countries. This looks like it will be the case even after October 1, 2023.ย

The Longer Answer: Traveling to Brazil is a great experience, but it is important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row so to speak. That means having the proper documentation needed to enter the country.ย

Here’s what you need to know about securing a visa for Brazil, specifically for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and European Union (EU) countries.

Section 1: US, Canada, Australia, and Japan
Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan can currently enter visa-free travel to Brazil for tourism or business purposes.ย

This applies to stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period. All you need is a valid passport with an expiry date at least six months beyond your intended departure from Brazil.

Brazil is looking to implement the visa requirement again for these four countries as of October 1, 2023, so plan in advance for this.ย

Section 2: European Union (EU)ย  Nationals

For most European Union citizens, including those from the UK, Germany, France, and Italy, also benefit from visa-free entry to Brazil.ย

This policy permits EU nationals to stay in Brazil for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. Like others, they will need a passport that is valid for at least six months past the date of entry into Brazil.

Visa and immigration requirements can and do change. It is always advised to check the latest information from the official government websites of Brazil or your home country’s foreign travel advisory services before making travel plans.

For the most recent and comprehensive information about visa requirements for all nationalities, consult the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or a Brazilian embassy or consulate near you during your pre-planning phase of your trip.ย

The October 1st, 2023 update does not look like it will affect EU Nationals, but research accordingly here.

What Do I Need on My Brazil Packing List?ย

Preparing an effective and well-organized suitcase is crucial for a smooth and successful trip anywhere. It helps save time and money and ensures you are ready for any situation. A well-stocked bag allows you to take only what you need, avoiding extra luggage and making transportation more accessible.

Avoiding excess baggage also helps prevent additional flight costs, which in turn saves you money.ย
Creating a checklist and organizing your suitcase before your trip is a valuable practice to ensure you have everything you need.

As your Campo Grande Travel Guide, Iโ€™ve curated a list focusing on your primary needs:

๐Ÿ”Œ Power Adapters: Brazil uses types C and N outlets. Make sure you have the correct adapters for your devices so you donโ€™t have to scramble around wasting time buying one there. One item that can save you when you need it most is a Power Bank; make sure to have at least one in your luggage. Consider also carrying a universal travel adapter to ensure compatibility with different outlets during your travels.

๐Ÿ“ณ Brazil and Campo Grande SIM Card: Staying connected is important, especially when traveling abroad. Get a Brazil or Campo Grande-specific SIM card for accessible communication and internet access. Brazil’s most common SIM card operators are Tim, Claro, Oi, and Vivo. This helps a ton when dealing with things like Maps and Uber.

๐Ÿ’ง Filterable Water Bottle: The tap water in Campo Grande is generally safe, but I still would not drink it. Carrying a filterable water bottle can come in handy and help you always stay hydrated. If possible, take a thermos to keep your water cool in the heat of Campo Grande. Consider investing in a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle for convenient access to clean water on the go.

๐Ÿ’Š Anti-Hangover Meds: Brazilโ€™s nightlife can get wild. It’s worth carrying anti-hangover medications to ensure your trip runs smoother. The last thing you want to do is waste an entire day out of a seven-day trip in bed with a hangover. And again, remember to hydrate.

๐Ÿ‘’ Sun Protection: The sun here can be intense, so donโ€™t try to ride it out. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen and a sun hat to protect your skin and face, or make room in your budget to buy it there.

๐ŸฆŸ Bug Repellent: Brazil is in a tropical climate, and Campo Grande has a lot of foliage; many mosquitoes will come with that. Whether you are on the beach when the sun is going down or hiking in the forest, this is a must. Don’t forget to pack eco-friendly bug repellent to keep those pesky insects at bay.

๐Ÿฉด Comfortable Footwear: Remember, there are many different terrains here. You will definitely need comfortable walking shoes and also sandals or flip-flops.

๐Ÿ“„ Travel Documents: Don’t forget your passport, visa (if required), and travel insurance documents. Travel insurance is good to have a few printouts if needed. It is also good to have a photocopy of these essential documents separately in case of loss or theft. Without photocopies, this would be a nightmare to deal with. You can also present your copy digitally on your cell phone.

The rest of your packing list should include clothing for the season you plan to travel to Campo Grande. Donโ€™t be afraid to adjust this list according to your needs and planned activities!

Is it Safe to Rent a Car and Drive in Campo Grande, Brazil?ย

Choosing to rent a car in Campo Grande may not be exactly essential at a time when transportation services like Uber and 99 are widely available. However, renting a car offers the best way to explore the region thoroughly.ย

You can stop wherever you want, as often as possible, without worrying about the cost of rides or waiting for a vehicle. Although renting a car can be more expensive, it can be valuable depending on your plans and where you stay. Also, if you plan to make an itinerary that includes other cities, having a car at your disposal is the most convenient option.

Iโ€™ve said in this Campo Grande Travel Guide, but itโ€™s a good repeat: the minimum age for renting a car is generally 21. Still, some categories, such as luxury vehicles, may require a higher minimum age due to a higher risk of accidents.

Although no insurance or other extras are compulsory, it is highly recommended to consider taking out insurance to avoid possible losses. Campo Grande can have complicated traffic at certain times of the day, so plan your departure to avoid peak hours in the morning and late afternoon, especially if you are traveling for leisure. Patience is key.

Do I Need to Speak Portuguese to Visit Brazil?

No, not at all. You don’t necessarily need to speak Portuguese to visit Brazil. Many people can communicate in English in tourist-heavy areas like Campo Grande, particularly in the hospitality industry.

However, learning a few basic phrases in Portuguese can make your travel experience better, help you engage more with the local culture, and be useful in situations where English isn’t widely spoken. Tools like DuoLingo are great, user-friendly language apps that help you learn the basics before your trip.

In any case, in this Campo Grande Travel Guide, I advise that knowledge of the language gives you a more comprehensive understanding of the local culture. It provides you with a more genuine experience. This allows you to engage with locals, understand their traditions, and participate in cultural events.

Here Are Some Great Language Preparation Options for Your Trip to Brazil:

Learn Basic Portuguese: Use language-learning platforms like DuoLingo or Pimsleur. They offer interactive courses to help you become more confident and conversational in Portuguese before your trip.

Use Google Translate App: This app is a lifesaver when navigating language barriers. Remember, you’ll need a Brazil SIM card with data for the app to work without WiFi.

Get a Portuguese Phrasebook: Consider packing a Portuguese phrasebook like the Lonely Planet Portuguese Phrasebook. It’s a fantastic non-digital assistant that can help you better communicate and understand the local language.

Even if you don’t become fluent, having some very basic knowledge of the local language will definitely enhance your travel experience in Florianopolis, Brazil. It will be much appreciated if the locals see you have tried to make an effort, even if it is small.

Is Brazil Safe for Solo Female Travel?ย

Yes, Brazil can be safe for solo female travelers, but taking precautions like anywhere in the world is essential.ย

As everywhere, this depends on several factors, such as the specific location you choose, the time of year, your planning, and your personal behavior. Brazil is a country of many facets, and safety can vary considerably from one region to another.ย

A valuable suggestion is to carry out thorough research into the destination you are heading for. Be aware of areas that may present security concerns and try to avoid them whenever possible.

Common sense safety includes researching and staying in well-reviewed accommodations, booking all your tours online and not with someone on the street, avoiding isolated areas at all times, and maintaining awareness of your surroundings.ย

In addition, do not bring anything flashy. Leave that at home.ย

Iย  also recommend you respect local customs and dress codes. Using trusted transportation services can help ensure safety when moving around, so ride-share apps like Uber or your own rental car are highly recommended.

In this Campo Grande travel guide, we recommend contacting friends or family and informing them about your plans.
