By Ferry: this ferry that crosses the continent to Ilhabela leaves the city of São Sebastião and transports passengers and vehicles. Well, there is no bridge or airport that connects Ilhabela to the rest of the continent, so the ferry is the way that will take you to the Island. The ferry is available 24 hours a day, every day of the week, with intervals ranging from approximately half an hour to an hour.

By Car: It is possible to go by car, but in any case, you will need to take the ferry to get to the island. And if you go by car to the north coast of São Paulo, you will need to take some care. The roads are great, but there are a lot of toll charges, and there are also a lot of speed control cameras.

By Transfer: A private transfer is a calmer option for those who don’t rent a car. There are several starting point options in São Paulo and also in Rio de Janeiro, with different vehicle models, including cars, vans, and minibusses. The transfer price will vary according to the starting point, the season, the number of people, and the car model. So before choosing this option, request a quote to be aware.

Ride Sharing (top choice): When I went to Ilhabela, throughout my trip, I only used Uber and walked to the nearest places. This is an option that I found to be very safe and hassle-free.

Rent a Car (top choice): Renting a car to go to Ilhabela offers you the greatest flexibility to explore the island. If you choose this option, you can rent a car on the mainland and bring it to the island by ferry. But it’s important that you clear up all your doubts before leaving with the car, such as questions about the contract and insurance. And remember to take your valid documents with you and be prepared to drive on the right side.

Take a Taxi: this can be a good option if there is a car available at the closest taxi point. Make sure you agree to the price in advance or check that the meter is on. If the driver says it’s a flat rate, ask in advance so you don’t get ripped off. It’s important to bear this in mind.

Extra Tip: Another option, which I personally think is cooler, is renting a quad bike or a scooter. This can be a very fun and practical alternative to exploring the island, especially if you are with a small group.
