Now I know everyone thinks of Brazil when it comes to amazing beaches. And if you are looking for marvelous beaches with a side of adventure, São Luís is the right city for you. São Luís is now getting attention for its vibrant reggae culture and restored colonial mansions turned boutique stays. This mix of music, heritage, and slow tourism makes the city a unique stop on any northeastern Brazil route.

São Luís Brazil: Quick travel tips before you go

🛫 Airport: In the city, we have Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (IATA: SLZ, ICAO: SBSL).

🤑 Currency: Here, we use the Brazilian Real, whose symbol is R$.

🗣️ Language: Portuguese, but English is very common in touristy areas.

🕰️ Time Zone: Brasilia Standard Time (GMT-3). For you to be located in time, this timezone is one hour ahead of EST and 4 hours ahead of PST.

💵 Cost: It can be very affordable if you come from a stronger currency than Real, like Dollar or Euro.

🛜 Internet: You’ll find a great Internet connection in São Luís, as it’s the capital of the state.

📄 Brazil Visa: As of now, If you are traveling from the United States, Canada, Australia, or Japan, then NO. This could change as of October 1, 2023. Track the status and details here. You do NOT need a visa for EU Nationals, and you may not be affected by the Oct 1, 2023 change. You can see the details here.

🔌 Power Outlets: Here, we commonly use two standard power outlets and voltage, Type N and C. Type N sockets, actually, are similar to Type C. The only different thing is that Type N plugs typically have three round pins. For visitors from other countries, you’ll need this universal travel adapter.

🔋 Power Grid: In general, Brazil operates on a 127/220V supply voltage and 60 Hz. Even if we can find it in some recent hotels 220V, don’t count on this everywhere.

📳 SIM Card: If you want to stay connected with family and friends, you’ll need a new SIM Card. The good thing is that they’re inexpensive. I recommend you to have a local SIM Card in every country you travel to.

🚘 Car Rentals: Some people tend to be very nervous when driving in a foreign country. Also, renting a car in Brazil might feel overwhelming for you. Either way, depending on your adventure, it could be the most practical way to get around.

São Luís Brazil: Safety Travel Tips (Use Common Sense)

🍏 Food safety: Food is pretty safe in São Luís and very delicious. I would say to you to avoid street vendors in general or eating shrimp on the beach, for example.

💧Water safety: If you want to do like me, always avoid tap water. It’s okay, though, to use it to brush your teeth or cooking. By the way, filtered water, ice, and bottled are safe everywhere you go. You can also use a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle. It is refillable but filters your water so you don’t get sick in Brazil.

👷‍♀️ Daytime safety: The common issue in most tourist areas is petty theft. I warn you to consider leaving behind fancy designer clothes or any accessories. I also like to don’t use my phone outside stores, restaurants, and hotels.

🦺 Nighttime safety: Here in Brazil, it’s not different from any big city you visit. It’s essential to use common sense to stay safe. I never keep valuables in my pockets, and I don’t usually go out alone at night. If it’s possible, don’t use the metro at night if you’re alone.

👺 Avoiding scams: I always make sure to keep my valuables securely locked up. Also, purchase your tickets for sightseeing tours and concerts online instead of from street vendors. I book taxis or Uber directly through my apps or with assistance from my hotel. Remember that it’s safer to withdraw money at banks rather than inside subway stations or stores. For nightlife, keep an eye on your drink and never leave it unattended to stay safe.

São Luís Brazil Travel Tips: A Local Perspective

🏨 Best neighborhoods for tourists: Historic Center (best for cultural programs), Ponta do Farol (best for shopping), Ponta D’Areia (best infrastructure), São Marcos, and Calhau (beachy neighborhoods).

🎄Top Brazilian holidays and traditions: The best moments in Brazil are Carnival, Festa Junina (June’s Party), Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

🍜 Local food to try: I can’t be honest with you if I don’t recommend you peixe assado (grilled fish), arroz de cuxá (cuxá rice), fried shrimp (just don’t eat it from beach vendors), Cupuaçú, and Bacuri (local fruits).

🍹 Local drinks to try (alcoholic): I personally like cachaça Tiquira, licor de jenipapo (jenipapo liqueur), and the classic caipirinha de cajú (cashew caipirinha).

🧉 Local drinks to try (non-alcoholic): The main drink you HAVE to taste in São Luís is Guaraná Jesus. It’s pink! I also like the regular guaraná and coconut water.

🚶‍♂️Walkability: The walkability in São Luís is great in the historic center. In general, I’d say it’s best to get ride-share app rides if you want to be swifter.

🎉 Nightlife: São Luís has an amazing nightlife scene. It has great live music, nightclubs, and tons of bars.

😀 Friendly to Foreigners: In general, Brazilian people love foreigners.

🏥 Hospitals: Pretty good! Here in Brazil, we have a free national healthcare program.

🇺🇸 English speaking: You’ll easily find English vendors and attendants in touristy areas.

Where is São Luís Brazil Located?

São Luís Map

São Luís is located in northeastern Brazil. It’s known for being a very good place if you like heavenly beaches and a warm temperature. Also, most people know São Luís Island for its historical and cultural significance, with a well-preserved colonial old town.

What State is São Luís In?

São Luís is the capital and largest city of the state of Maranhão in Brazil, and it’s situated on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. You have to go for it if you’re looking for a unique blend of indigenous, African, and Portuguese influences. This city is the perfect vacation for you!

São Luís TRAVEL GUIDE

What’s the Closest Airport to São Luís Brazil?

São Luís has an international Airport called Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (IATA: SLZ, ICAO: SBSL). The best option to get there, if you come from another country, is making a connection with one of the International Airports of the cities of São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. It’s also possible to go directly to São Luís from another country, but the tickets are a lot more expensive.

What is the Best Way to Get to Your São Luís Hotel?

Once you’ve arrived at Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (IATA: SLZ, ICAO: SBSL), you have a variety of ways to get to São Luís. You can always go by bus, but it’ll demand more logistics from you, especially if you have a lot of luggage.

But remember, you can always go by Uber or taxi directly to your hotel. This way, you don’t have to think about it upon landing. Taxis are usually the easier option since you have plenty near Airports, but they are more expensive than app rides.

💡 Pro Tip: If you are planning to take an Uber, make sure that you have a Brazil SIM card so that your phone operates properly. You never want to depend on free public WIFI for using your ride-share apps.

If you take a taxi, be sure the meter is on to avoid any kind of scam. This is a thing you have to do in every country abroad, not only in Brazil.

Car renting is constantly the best option you can get when you’re abroad, and it wouldn’t be different in São Luís. It’s the perfect choice if you want to explore the city for yourself or if it’s a family trip. The only situation that isn’t appropriate is if you plan to drink. In this context, I suggest you get private shuttles and Ubers for a safer and more carefree experience.

How to Get Around São Luís?

Ride Sharing (top choice): Uber and other ride-sharing services are very convenient while you’re in São Luís! They’re not only kind to your wallet but also super convenient in cities where buses are less common. It’s like having your personal chauffeur to explore the city.

Rent a Car (top choice): As I said, renting a car is the best option for you if you like having freedom. You can chase down those hidden beaches and cruise along stunning coastal routes on your terms. It’s all about flexibility. Just remember to bring your valid driver’s license.

Take a Taxi: Honestly, I consider taking a taxi a reliable way to get rides in any place in Brazil. You’ll find them pretty much everywhere and with ease. Just make sure the meter is running when you get in the car or agree on a fare before the ride to avoid any kind of surprise.

Buses: São Luís has a public bus system that works well in general. If you don’t want to be late to your appointments, check the routes and schedules during planning the ride. I always use the Moovit app to be sure what line I have to take, the path it takes, and the bus stops near me.

Walking: Usually, most of the historic city center in our country is perfect for exploring on foot! My tips are that if I’m going by my legs, I always have a bottle of filtered water with me and prefer wearing comfortable clothes and shoes. I simply don’t want to be annoyed by my feet hurting during a ride.

Biking: Bike lanes and bike-sharing programs in São Luís are growing a lot these days. If you enjoy cycling, just go for it. The good thing is that it’s also a sustainable way to discover the city.

Remembering some key situations is the main goal of this Travel Guide, like traffic congestion during rush hours. So, don’t plan your trips at the last minute. For me, it’s better to get there early than late. Also, be cautious during the nighttime, especially if you’re traveling by yourself.

When to Go to São Luís?

Well, there’s no secret answer for it. It’s all up to you. Do you prefer enjoying Brazilian peak heat? Are you more into getting around the historical heritage and need peace and calm to do it? Everything depends on how you want to get around São Luís. Despite your particular desires, I always say that it’s best to check the weather and the season’s climate trends for when you plan to stay there.

São Luís, Brazil Summer (December to March): It’s the highest season in São Luís, and for good reason. It’s the best time to enjoy all these marvelous beaches the city has. But nothing is perfect. Be ready for some serious heat and humidity. If you can handle the warmth, it’s a great time to visit!

Summer Carnival: If you’re like me and you’re into big, lively parties, this is your moment! São Luís goes all out for Carnival with parades, music, and loads of dancing and drinking. Just prepare yourself for the crowds and the excitement!

São Luís, Brazil Fall (April and May): Autumn in São Luís is actually still pretty warm, and the beaches are still great. It’s a nice balance between the summer with busy beaches and the coolest season.

São Luís, Brazil Winter (June to August): This is the rainy and milder weather, and you’ll see quite a bit of them. So, if you’re okay with wet weather and don’t mind cold winds, this could be your time to experience a great moment with fewer people and less noise in São Luís.

São Luís, Brazil Spring (September to November): I love spring in São Luís! It’s pretty sweet. The weather is warming up, but it’s not too hot yet. It’s a great time to enjoy the city without sweating buckets.

After all, there’s no bad weather when going to São Luís. So, pick your favorite season and go have a blast!

Where to Stay in São Luís Brazil? (By Neighborhood)

Walking on cobblestone through the pastel buildings of Sao Luis on vacation
São Luís Travel Guide: Cool pastel buildings on cobblestone streets courtesy of @CentroHistoricoDeSaoLuis

Whether you’re into cobblestone streets and history or modern convenience, São Luís has it all. As it is with any other city in the world, the best setting for your stay there depends on your preferences and interests.

In my view, the best areas to stay there are the Historic Center, Ponta do Farol, Ponta D’Areia, São Marcos, and Calhau.

So, let this São Luís Travel Guide give you some information about these cool neighborhoods for your adventure!

Ponta do Farol (best for couples and groups)

This area is great if you’re looking for a mix of city and beach vibes. Let me explain why: you’re close to the sea and to some nice hotels and resorts. They have fantastic views and easy access to the sand! And also, it’s the most luxurious neighborhood.

Historic Center (best central location)

Go for it if you’re all about immersing yourself in the city’s culture and history. Some of the aspects that I love about this area are the charming colonial architecture and cool cobblestone streets. This is the perfect spot to explore it on foot with your cozy shoes.

Ponta D’Areia

This is the place where you’ll find the sun-seekers, surfers, and folks who love a lively seaside vibe. For me, the best part of this area is that there are a bunch of beachfront bars and restaurants, perfect for the ones who love seafood and sipping caipirinhas while appreciating the waves.

São Marcos

I like to say that São Marcos is like the chilled-out cousin of Ponta D’Areia. The reasons are that the beach here is quieter and more relaxed. It’s the kind of spot where you can just kick back, swim, and enjoy some peace and quiet by the ocean.

Calhau

Now, if you’re all about after-beachfront relaxation, Calhau is your jam. There, you’ll get a lot of beachside bars. It’s a bit away from the historic center, but trust me, you’ll find some comfortable hotels here.

  • Historic Center: Get around the heart of the city visiting Palhaço dos Leões, Arthur Azevedo Theater, Casa do Maranhão, and Centro de Pesquisa Arqueologia e História Natural do Maranhão. Don’t forget to go to the São Luís Local Fair if you want to buy some crafters and souvenirs.
  • Explore the Churches: São Luís has a lot of beautiful churches with outstanding stained glass. The best ones are Igreja da Sé, Convento das Merces, and Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
  • Lençóis Maranhenses: Despite being outside São Luís, you have to visit it. It’s a 5-hour trip by car, but trust me, it’s worth it. It’s like stepping into a dream! Imagine vast sand dunes that seem to stretch on forever. And in between, there are these crystal-clear lagoons that look out of this world. It’s a paradise.
  • Explore the beaches: If you’re still wondering, the main activity of the city is its beautiful beaches. Don’t miss the warm sea water and go visit Calhau Beach, São Marcos, Ponta D’Areia Beach, and Caolho Beach.

Best São Luís Tours

Taking a festive tour of Sao Luis while on vacation
Take in the festival vibes, courtesy of @CentroHistoricoDeSaoLuis

I love joining guided tours. It’s one of my favorite ways to get to know the city better! I have the help and all the necessary knowledge about museums, parks, and monuments.

Even if they’re not plenty, the tours in São Luís offer a bunch of new experiences. You’ll also find some tours to places outside the city, like the Lençóis Maranhenses and Alcântara.

Tours are the most budget-friendly option. In my view, the only situation that touring can be an inconvenience is if you’re renting a car in São Luís.

Knowing it all, this São Luís Travel Guide decided to carefully prepare for you a list of tips and the tours you have to do during your stay.

💡Pro Tip: In a destination where I have a number of days to explore, I’ve learned that kicking things off with a neighborhood tour is a smart move. It helps me to decide where I want to spend the rest of my time.

💡 Pro tip: I prefer booking any kind of tour online, on safe websites. For me, it’s always the best option. So, I don’t recommend buying directly from the street vendors. The chances of this being a scam are pretty high. Better be safe than sorry!

💡 Pro tip: Check the weather before planning the tours. Some beachside cities are rainy, and this is São Luís’s case. It wouldn’t be cool to go on an amazing beach tour when it’s all gray outside.

Here are the Best São Luís Tours to Join:

  • Lençóis Maranhenses Day Trip: You’ll hit up the Lençóis Maranhenses crossing flooded areas and thick vegetation. It’s a wild but beautiful and pleasant ride!
  • Alcântara Day Trip: Hop on a catamaran for cruising to Alcântara, the fancy-pants city of 19th-century Maranhão. You’ll get a grand tour of museums, churches, and fountains.
  • Walking Tour of the Historical Center: This is the correct tour if your priority is getting to know the historical center of São Luís. With this tour, you’ll explore the city and understand why it’s a World Heritage Site from UNESCO.
  • Romantic Tour: If you’re traveling with your loved one, I’d say you both have to catch this tour. You’ll know the best places to go out, take cute pictures, and, obviously, have a lot of fun in two!
  • Private Custom Tours: When I don’t feel like it with any of the tour options I have, I prefer private customized tours. This way, I’m free to create my own itinerary and explore at my own pace.

Is São Luís Safe for Tourists?

As this Travel Guide said before, yes, São Luís is a safe place for tourists. However, as with any destination in the world, it’s important to take some standard precautions. Below, I’ll share with you some of the steps I consider essential to feel safe.

💡Personal Pro Safety Tips (For any city you travel to):

  • Make sure to research the destination in advance, including any local safety concerns or areas to avoid.
  • Try to always keep your belongings, especially your passport and wallet, in a concealed money belt or a secure bag when exploring the city.
  • I usually only carry what I need for the day, leaving unnecessary items at the hotel to reduce the risk of theft.
  • When I’m in a city I don’t know by heart, I prefer going around with registered taxis, ride-sharing apps, or public transportation over unmarked or unofficial services.
  • Informing a friend or family member about my daily plans is crucial. In case of emergencies, I also like to share my location using a travel app.
  • I keep in my notes app and in my journal a list of local emergency contacts, including the embassy or consulate, handy just in case.
  • Steer clear of neighborhoods known for high crime rates or areas with political instability, especially if you’re alone.
  • Last but not least, you HAVE to have travel insurance to cover unexpected incidents, from medical emergencies to trip cancellations.

Remember, safety first is the golden rule. Personally, these tips always help me to feel safer and have a smooth travel experience.

What is the Best Travel Insurance for Brazil?

Well, tap water is a huge NO in all of Brazil.

Tap water isn’t drinkable anywhere in our country. It is safe to use externally, but don’t drink it under any circumstances!

You will be able to safely brush your teeth and do your hygiene, but no Salvador travel guide will tell you it’s okay to chug it. You’d do best by buying bottled water when needed or carrying a refillable one to take advantage of filters.

Most establishments that deal with food have a filter to make ice and drinks, so you can ask for some ‘água da casa.’ If it’s not available, then just buy a bottle.

Also, another topic every Salvador travel guide touches on is how hot it can get here ALL YEAR LONG. So stay properly hydrated when you’re outside; otherwise, you can get sick and ruin your entire trip.

So Your Steps to Stay Safe With the Water Are:

  1. If you are in an Airbnb, boil water in case there isn’t a filter. The filter is usually attached to the kitchen sink faucet.
  2. At hotels, buy bottled water in the absence of filters. This can get expensive quickly, so look for grocery stores nearby to buy it cheaper.
  3. Bring along or buy a reusable water bottle to refill, and because refilling is generally free, you don’t have to worry about something as simple as buying drinking water while in Salvador, Brazil.

Let’s explore what each of them brings to the table:

World Nomads: Best for comprehensive coverage, flexibility, AND adventure sports. Covers trip cancellation, emergency medical costs, and emergency medical transportation and protects your travel gear.

SafetyWing: This is for general travelers, frequent travelers,  and long-term digital nomads in Brazil. Provides lots of flexibility as far as start date, coverage extension, and automatic renewals. It also has limited home-country coverage.

Travel Insurance Master: Brazil travel insurance search tool, this is for people who really want to compare policies.

Can you drink the water in São Luís Brazil?

The short answer is NO.

When it comes to sipping on water in São Luís, Brazil, let’s play it safe. Even if it seems like it’s treated and it’s okay to drink, I simply don’t want to take any chances, and you probably won’t either.

Feel free, though, to use tap water for brushing your teeth or cooking. But when it comes to drinking it, it’s smarter to grab some bottled water or bring your filtered water bottle.

The good thing is that many restaurants in São Luís serve up purified water, and they use it for making ice, too. So, your favorite cold drinks are usually good for consumption. But if you’re still not feeling it, bottled water is your trusty sidekick.

And don’t forget, the Brazilian sun can really turn up the heat, so keeping hydrated is a must. You don’t want something like dehydration during your trip when it’s entirely preventable.

Here’s a friendly water safety plan for you to use in São Luís, Brazil:

  1. If you’re in an Airbnb and you can’t easily find bottled water around, here’s a nifty idea: boil the tap water before you drink it.
  2. When you’re in a hotel, it’s totally cool to go for that bottled water. It might be pricy, but your peace of mind is worth it.
  3. Get yourself a filtered water bottle. It’s a reusable gem that you can fill up for free in some public places like malls and museums. Something like the Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle

What’s the São Luís Weather Like?

Average min and max temperatures in São Luís, Brazil

When it comes to São Luís weather, you better be ready for some serious heat. This city is not shy about cranking up the temperature dial. Take a look at some information about the seasons in São Luís collected by this Travel Guide, especially for you:

When the rainy season hits from January to June, it’s definitely a ride. Rain comes and goes, and it’s the hottest moment of the year. So, sunscreen, hats, clear-color clothes, and hydration are your must during this time. But if you’re looking for that tropical downpour vibe, this is your cup of tea.

Now, the dry season, which rolls from July to December, eases up a bit on the humidity, but don’t get too comfortable. The sun is still out to play, and you’ll feel it. All of the sun protection and precautions will be necessary in São Luís. It doesn’t matter what season you choose to stay there.

So, whether it’s wet or dry, São Luís knows how to turn up the weather. Of course, be aware of your plans and pack your luggage accordingly to get ready to embrace the heat and maybe a few raindrops. Enjoy your trip!

Is São Luís Expensive?

São Luís is not exactly expensive, but it’s not dirt cheap either. You’ll find that some things, like street food and public transportation, can be quite budget-friendly. Also, there are plenty of local markets where you can score some deals on fresh produce and snacks. But if you’re into dining at fancier restaurants or hitting the bars, it can add up. Let’s talk about some general observations on how to spend in São Luís!

Transportation is a mixed bag. Taxis are reasonably priced, and ride-sharing apps like Uber are more handy. But, if you’re covering long distances, intercity buses can be a better option for your pocket.

Now, when we talk about accommodations, it varies. You’ve got your classic budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, as well as some more upscale and really, really fancy hotels, especially in beachy neighborhoods like Ponta do Farol.

Overall, São Luís won’t break your bank, but we can’t say it’s not a total steal either. So, if you don’t want to leave all your money in Brazil, plan your spending. Also, a smart budget and some savvy spending can keep your wallet in check while you enjoy this lovely city.

Is São Luís Worth Visiting?

A hundred percent yes, São Luís is worth a visit! As this Travel Guide already said to you, the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s like stepping back in time. And if you like exploring the local culture, it’s the perfect place for you.

Also, the nearby Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a natural wonderland with its epic sand dunes and lagoons. If you’re into breathtaking landscapes, this place is a must-see.

We can’t finish it without talking about food. It’s simply delicious, the people are friendly, and the cultural scene is lively. Plus, if you time your visit right, you can experience the dazzling São Luís Carnival, which is a party like no other.

So, if you’re into history, nature, culture, and good vibes, São Luís should definitely be on your travel radar. It’s a little slice of Brazil that’s often overlooked but totally worth the trip.

How Many Days Do I Need in São Luís Brazil?

Well, it depends on what you’re into.  If you’re all about soaking up the historic city center, you can get a feel for the place in a couple of days. You’ll have time to explore the cobblestone streets, check out the old architecture, and dive into the local culture.

But suppose you’re up for more adventures, like a day trip to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park or Alcântara. In that case, you’ll want to budget more time. These natural wonders are a bit of a trek from the city, but they’re totally worth it.

And if you’re a Carnival enthusiast, make sure to plan your visit during that epic celebration. That’s a whole different story and needs its own set of days.

In a nutshell, São Luís can be a quick stop or a more extended stay, depending on what’s on your travel wishlist.

General São Luís, Brazil Travel Info & FAQ

🌞 São Luís Weather

São Luís is located in the Brazilian Northeast region. So, it’s a very hot city throughout the year. Since the city’s on the beachside, you’ll find hot and windy days. Don’t forget to protect your skin! São Luís has high temperatures for most part of the year, so you can enjoy the beaches at any time of the year.

💰 Brazil Currency

Brazil’s official currency is the Brazilian Real, symbolized as BRL or R$. Credit cards or Travel Debit are used in almost every store and hotel. However, it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand. That way, you’ll be ready if you want to buy souvenirs from a street vendor, for example.

🗣️ Brazil Language

Brazil’s official language is Portuguese, so in São Luís and throughout the country, this is what you’ll most likely hear. Even if English is spoken in many tourist areas and hotels, it’s a great deal to learn a few basic Portuguese phrases. It will get you a long way from an experience and a local perception standpoint.

So, if you want to do it, I recommend you great tools like Duolingo and Pimsleur.

🛫 São Luís Brazil Busy Season & Slow Season

São Luís Busy Season: This is the perfect time to visit the city if you want to enjoy the complete experience of Brazilian summer. During this time, Sao Luís is a lively and energetic place. You’ll find very hot and sunny days and crowded beaches and its surroundings. It intensifies during Brazilian national holidays, especially Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Carnival.

São Luís Slow Season: If you want to enjoy the city in calmer moments and mild temperatures, go to São Luís from April to October. It’s less crowded than during the summer. It’s the perfect time to explore the city, appreciate the cultural and historical richness, and get a more local perspective.

São Luís Shoulder Season: The moment between busy and slow seasons offers favorable weather conditions and a more relaxed atmosphere. This is the ideal moment for those who want to avoid peak tourist crowds while still experiencing the best the city can give you. Checking current weather and events before planning your visit is always a good idea to have the best experience.

Do I Need a Visa for Brazil?

The Short Answer: If you are traveling from the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, the answer is no, UNTIL October 1, 2023, then the answer is yes. Currently, no visa is necessary from European Union (EU) countries. This looks like it will be the case even after October 1, 2023.

The Longer Answer Traveling to Brazil is a great experience, but it is important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row so to speak. That means having the proper documentation needed to enter the country.

Here’s what you need to know about securing a visa for Brazil, specifically for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and European Union (EU) countries.

Section 1: US, Canada, Australia, and Japan
Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan can currently enter visa-free travel to Brazil for tourism or business purposes.

This applies to stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period. All you need is a valid passport with an expiry date at least six months beyond your intended departure from Brazil.

Brazil is looking to implement the visa requirement again for these four countries as of October 1, 2023, so plan in advance for this.

Section 2: European Union (EU)  Nationals

For most European Union citizens, including those from the UK, Germany, France, and Italy, also benefit from visa-free entry to Brazil.

This policy permits EU nationals to stay in Brazil for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. Like others, they will need a passport that is valid for at least six months past the date of entry into Brazil.

Visa and immigration requirements can and do change. It is always advised to check the latest information from the official government websites of Brazil or your home country’s foreign travel advisory services before making travel plans.

For the most recent and comprehensive information about visa requirements for all nationalities, consult the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or a Brazilian embassy or consulate near you during your pre-planning phase of your trip.

The October 1st, 2023 update does not look like it will affect EU Nationals, but research accordingly here.

What Do I Need on My Brazil Packing List?

When you’re packing, the most important thing to have in mind is balance. Overpacking and underpacking bring different but a lot of problems. You don’t want to carry unnecessary stuff, and you also don’t want to spend money buying sunscreen, for example.

That’s why this Travel Guide brought to you tips to pack the perfect luggage for your trip. The first thing you need to know is that this is an activity that has to be done well in advance.

Here’s a curated list focusing on your primary needs:

🔌 Power Adapters: Make sure you’ve got the right power adapters for your gadgets (types C and N). No one wants to waste time hunting for them when you arrive. For visitors from other countries, you’ll need this universal travel adapter.

📳 Brazil and Florianopolis SIM Card: Staying connected is a must when you’re abroad, so think about grabbing a Brazil SIM card. It’ll keep you chatting and navigating without a hitch.

💧 Filterable Water Bottle: São Luís tap water is usually fine, but it’s a good idea not to drink it straight. Tote a water bottle with a filter, and you’ll stay hydrated without having to buy bottled water everywhere you go. You can use a Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle. It is refillable, but filters your water so you don’t risk getting sick in Brazil.

💊 Anti-Hangover Meds: Brazil’s nightlife can get pretty wild. Toss some anti-hangover meds in your bag to be prepared to handle it.

👒 Sun Protection: The Brazilian sun means business, so look out for your skin. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen and a cool sun hat to keep your face safe from those fiery rays. Trust me; a sunburn can ruin your trip.

🦟 Bug Repellent: Mosquitoes love Brazil’s tropical climate, and if you’re allergic like me, mosquitoes also love you. So, be prepared – bug repellent is a must. To make it easy, here is an eco-friendly bug repellent.

🩴 Comfortable Footwear: Make sure you’ve got comfy walking shoes for exploring and sandals or flip-flops for the beach.

📄 Travel Documents: Don’t forget your travel docs! Your passport, visa (if you need one), and travel insurance papers are super important. They’re your identification abroad. I usually grab a few printed copies of that insurance, just in case. It could be a lifesaver if things go wrong.

The rest of your packing should be all about your preferences and the weather during your São Luís trip. Add to this list your personal necessities to match your style and the activities you’ve got in store. Have a blast!

Is it Safe to Rent a Car and Drive in São Luís Brazil?

You can totally rent a car in cities like São Luís, Brazil. Just keep in mind that since it’s a capital and a tourist hot spot, traffic can get pretty hectic at times.

I get it. Navigating foreign traffic rules might seem like a puzzle, but São Luís is usually cooler to drive in than São Paulo, for example. Even if the road signs are all in Portuguese, you can count on GPS or trusty Google Maps on your phone to guide you in your native language. And remember, we drive on the right side of the road here in Brazil.

Safety comes first, always. So, get yourself some good car rental insurance – it’s easy to find at the rental agency. And when you park, lock up your car and make sure your stuff isn’t visible to prying eyes.

All in all, what this Travel Guide wants to say to you is that having your own wheels in São Luís means you’ve got the freedom to go where you want. Renting a car isn’t just about getting around. It can be a big part of your adventure!

Do I Need to Speak Portuguese to Visit Brazil?

always prefer to learn the local language. For example, in less touristy spots, having some basic Portuguese language skills can be super handy. Even a little Portuguese can enhance your experience, especially when interacting with locals. It’s a big differential, trust me. It’ll make it easier to dive into the local culture and handle situations!

In situations when I travel to places where I don’t know the language, I rely on language-learning tools like Duolingo. It’s a user-friendly app that can help you pick up essential rules and vocabulary both before and during your trip. My experience says that it’s one of the best ways to bridge the language gap.

Here are some on-hand language prep tips to use while you’re in São Luís, Brazil:

Learn Basic Portuguese: As I said before, try out apps like Duolingo or Pimsleur. They offer interactive courses that can boost your confidence and get you to talk in Portuguese before your trip.

Use Google Translate App: It’ll be a lifesaver if you find yourself in a situation where understanding a bit of Portuguese is crucial. Just make sure you have a working Brazil SIM card with data so the app can work without Wi-Fi.

Get a Portuguese Phrasebook: I always like to have some ‘analogic’ tool with me, just in case I get caught in a no-connection situation. So, I keep with me a small physical Portuguese phrasebook like the Lonely Planet Portuguese Phrasebook.

This Travel Guide isn’t trying to say to you to become a Portuguese expert. If you’re like me and like to get deep into the local culture, get some basic knowledge of the target language. As a local, I really like it when I meet a tourist and get that they at least made an effort to learn Portuguese!

Is Brazil Safe for Solo Female Travel?

Sure, São Luís is a safe place to visit! Just like when you travel anywhere else in the world, it’s essential to take some common-sense safety measures.

Start with some basic safety practices, like doing your research and choosing well-reviewed accommodations. I personally prefer booking tours and activities online or through reputable agencies rather than dealing with street vendors.

My personal behaviors are that I usually tend to avoid isolated areas when I’m alone, especially at night. I also avoid wearing flashy or attention-grabbing items. I always recommend for those who want to travel to stay aware of your surroundings, too.

As mentioned throughout this Travel Guide, use trusted transportation services like ride-sharing apps or rental cars when getting around. I also think that it’s a good practice to keep your family and friends informed about your whereabouts and daily plans.

If you’re all about sun, sand, and sea, visiting São Luís has all the potential to be the trip of a lifetime. Just don’t hesitate and go to visit this wonderful city!
