Each region of the largest country in South America will have its staples on its dishes. Coconut milk, cassava flour, black beans, egg yolks, black-eyed peas, or tapioca flour. Maybe one of these ingredients won’t tickle your fancy or you may have allergies, in which case knowing ingredients can help you be prepared.
Part of being prepared to eat Brazil’s famous food is to understand Brazilian cuisine, after all, it goes way beyond the main ingredients of rice and beans. Traditional Brazilian food is as diverse as our people, let’s be on our way!
How to Define Brazilian Cuisine?
We know each cuisine has its own defining characteristics. Italian cuisine is all about different pasta dishes, most Japanese dishes will have fresh seafood but what about Brazil? Popular Brazilian foods won’t all have a staple ingredient. So I’d define Brazilian cuisine as diverse! We have roots in traditional food brought by African slaves, who used a lot of cassava flour and black beans.
Famous food from Brazil uses a variety of ingredients that can make you dizzy, so let’s start talking about the most famous dishes of Brazil. We will talk about them in regions to make our journey a little easier. Brazil’s five regions are home to great food, so grab a snack now before we get hungry talking about it. Let’s go!

What Famous Food From Brazil Do You Have to Try?
Spreading over most of whatever land South America has to offer, our journey looking for famous food from Brazil is about to begin!
Pato no Tucupi
Pato no Tucupi is a traditional Brazilian cuisine dish that was created in Parรก. It is a brothy creation with a Tucupi base mixed with jambu, an ingredient known for making your mouth tingly in larger quantities. In this dish, paired with a duck tender because it was marinated overnight in lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper.
Once the broth is done, it is generally served over freshly made white rice. You will notice once you’re trying famous food from Brazil, this is a rather common side dish in every region. You’ll have great luck finding northern dishes in Sรฃo Paulo, I recommend you go to a restaurant called Casa Tucupi. It specializes in Tucupi-based dishes.
Brazil Famous Food
Bolo de Macaxeira
While most dishes are perfect for a hearty meal, this is perfect to have with a side of black coffee. Bolo de Macaxeira is a delightful recipe that goes back to our original people on the banks of the Amazon River. Instead of using cassava flour, you get tons of flavor from coconut milk and texture from grated raw cassava. You could mix every ingredient in a blender but who wants to cook while on vacation?
Brazilian cuisine is about so much more than the food itself, it is about the environment you’re eating it in. And there are few things more local than stopping for a bit at a cafeteria. Just remember that not everyone will have this cake, so always look up their menu beforehand if you want to try a specific dish.
Tacacรก
There is a hugely popular Brazilian song called ‘Voando Para o Parรก’ that made this dish famous once again, and for good reason. Tacacรก, like Pato no Tucupi, is a brothy dish. It has no coconut milk, so you won’t have to worry about missing out on any flavors, coconut milk can have an overpowering flavor when compared to the leafy base.
Another important thing you should know about this dish is that it has a few main ingredients but a clear protagonist: shrimp. Meaning if you have a shellfish allergy, it is best to avoid having this specific dish. Should you have no dietary restrictions, I highly recommend trying this along with some white rice and farofa to add more texture to your plate.
Brazil Famous Food
Acarajรฉ
Continuing our search for famous food from Brazil, we make the first northeastern stop with this amazing dish called Acarajรฉ, created in our lands with African influence because of Brazilian slaves. It is perfect for when you are on the go! It is a little sandwich made with a black-eyed peas-based bun cut in half. Wildly different from other buns like pรฃo de queijo, it shines because of Dendรช Oil.
The filling is a unique kind of paste made with chili peppers, Dendรช Oil, Spices, and Shrimp. Sometimes a splash of coconut milk! As I said before, avoid this dish if you are allergic to shellfish. Nowadays you are able to find vegan options that taste even better, so there’s no need to worry about missing out either.
Vatapรก
What makes traditional Brazilian food magical is how most dishes have their origins dating as far back as Brazil’s own origins, and Vatapรก is no different. The best way to define it would be by comparing it to mashed potatoes in texture. However main ingredients can vary depending on which state you get it. It’ll always taste a little bit like home and history though.
My tip for you is to always be careful when eating it because recipes can vary to include local ingredients, nuts, or shrimp and your allergies can be triggered. So you’d do best by preparing beforehand with vocabulary enough to ask about ingredients, just a few keywords in Portuguese will go a long way to make your trip that much better.
Brazil Famous Food
Moqueca
Wrapping up our stop in Brazil’s Northeastern region, let me introduce you to the wonderful Moqueca. Typical of Parรก and Espirรญto Santo, it really has its home in Bahia. This dish is a stew made traditionally on a clay pot, using fish as a protein. Nowadays, it is a whole lot easier to find vegetarian or vegan options that use coconut milk instead of heavy cream and mushrooms instead of fish.
Whenever you’re in Sao Paulo hoping to try this dish, there is a restaurant called Ki-Muqueca waiting for you. They are a restaurant franchise specializing in food from Bahia, with a few awards attesting to their quality. Just remember that Bahian food tends to be quite spicy so get a drink with your food!
Pacu Assado
Starting our journey on famous food from Brazil’s Midwestern region, we have this main dish called Pacu Assado. What makes this unique in South America is not only the fact that Pacu is a sweetwater fish, but it is also generally done with whole fish, not just fillets. It is typically seasoned with green and regular onions, olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, and other spices.
But we all know a protein isn’t an entire meal so most restaurants will let you pick some sides as well. I recommend you get a portion of white rice, a traditional Brazilian food, some salad and then you should either get fries or mashed potatoes. Some people get black beans but I think their flavor can be overpowering.
Brazil Famous Food
Vaca Atolada
Should there ever be an election for the most traditional Brazilian food, I think white rice could easily win it. Vaca Atolada, another stewy dish, is just perfect to have on top of fresh rice made with tons of garlic. This hearty stew is usually made with bovine ribs and cassava, whole not cassava flour because that would just thicken the broth.
What really makes this dish shine is how each person that prepares seasons it, you will never have two servings be the same. To have a good Vaca Atolada, I recommend you look for restaurants with a homey vibe to them, because this is the kind of dish families cook together so you are more likely to get well-made traditional food.
Bolinho de Arroz
Although this dish is typical of northeastern lands, I can recall many Sunday mornings spent in the kitchen with my mother while we put it together for lunch. Back home, our recipe required old rice leftover from weekday lunches, finely chopped onions, green onions along with whatever else our hearts felt like it.
We did it as a side dish instead of a main course, but you will surely find places where it shines as a protagonist. You should know that bolinhos are typically prepared by deep frying batter in incredibly hot oil. So if you’d rather stay away from oilier dishes, keep on reading!
Brazil Famous Food
Pรฃo de Queijo
Other than being a contender for the number one spot in a ‘Famous Food From Brazil’ competition, pรฃo de queijo is one of my all-time favorite foods. I usually cheat a little in making it by getting pre-made dough from supermarkets but for you to try authentic ones, you should make a detour to Minas Gerais. There’s no better place to try pรฃo de queijo, trust me.
I never had a better one than going to municipal markets, looking for a coffee shop to kill some time at. Pรฃo de queijo is like a small bun that has cheese and milk as its main ingredients so lactose intolerant folks may want to steer clear of this one. In major cities like Sรฃo Paulo, you might be able to find lactose-free versions!
Bauru
While most traditional Brazilian food is what we affectionately ‘comida de verdade’, meals you sit down for and spend some time at. Baurus however, are things born out of the need to eat on the go. This sandwich begins with a loaf of ‘pรฃo francรชs’, which translates to French bread. Fun fact: despite its name, this kind of bread was actually created in Brazilian lands.
Besides that, it generally has a generous amount of roast beef slices, with just as much cheese and then some tomato slices to tie it all up. A Brazilian cuisine staple, Bauru was created on the Sรฃo Paulo city which shares the same name but you can have it all over the state.
Brazil Famous Food
Churrasco
This is our winner should there ever be a ‘Famous Food From Brazil’ competition in the future. Churrasco is much more than the food you have! It is about spending time with those we love, eating way too much, and yes, sometimes it is also about getting a little drunk on special occasions. To have a proper churrasco experience, be prepared to spend a little more than expected.
A great churrasco will, of course, have great meat cuts and chicken hearts to begin with. But in the real Brazilian cuisine version? You will have a potato salad, which includes other root vegetables, garlic bread, and vinaigrette sauce. A plus side to being so popular is you won’t be restricted to major cities like Rio de Janeiro, every town will have a good Brazilian restaurant waiting for you.
Cachorro Quente
One time, a few weeks after I had moved to the USA, my friend offered me a hot dog and all I could feel was deep confusion. What she had offered was very different from the Brazilian recipes I had grown up with. It might be simple, with no fancy ingredients like coconut milk or palm oil, but it just tastes like home to me. Please don’t ask how many I had when my grandma made them upon my return home.
In Brazil, we boil our sausages instead of grilling them, make a rich tomato sauce base, and serve it on a bun with various toppings depending on where you are. Sao Paulo has mashed potatoes, Southern Brazil puts hay potatoes along with shredded cheese, and you can imagine what else can be found.
Bigger urban centers like Sรฃo Paulo will have restaurants where you are able to build your own hot dog in a buffet style!
Brazil Famous Food
Pastel
I know that my opinion is just one among millions of Brazilians, but there has to be at least one person who agrees that Pastel should be the national dish of Brazil. This is like pรฃo de queijo, you can find it virtually anywhere since most Brazilian restaurants will serve it as a side dish on lunch buffets. However, it is so versatile, it can be your main course!
Pastรฉis are made with a thinly stretched dough, kind of like lasagna, filled with whatever you can think of. Back home, my mom used to make them special for my little sisters with hot dog sausages and cheese. Nowadays, I am a huge fan of Calabrese pork sausage pastรฉis while my girlfriend generally goes for a shrimp one.
Brigadeiro and Beijinho
As much as we all enjoy savory foods, Brazil has an equally huge number of iconic desserts like bolo de rolo, fubรก cake, pavรชs, and much more. Everyone agrees that the top two spots for ‘Brazil Famous Food’ in the sweets category must go to Brigadeiro and Beijinho.
They are the most popular food at all birthday parties, bring comfort to broken hearts, and add sweetness to every day when I just feel like whipping a batch.
They are both very similar, a kind of fudge made with a sweet condensed milk base. Brigadeiro is made with chocolate, whichever kind you can get your hands on is fine! Beijinho’s status as a popular dish is guaranteed by adding coconut milk to sweet condensed milk, stirring well then mixing in grated coconut.
I don’t think you will have time to go to a birthday party during your trip but there will definitely be a few minutes to duck into a bakery for a sweet moment.
Brazil Famous Food: Wrap Up
Sure, Brazil is an absolute giant taking up most of South America’s territory. You may even be thinking that there is no way you will be able to try it all without traveling for weeks on end but don’t worry! There is always a way and in this case,e it is coming to Sรฃo Paulo.
Since this is Brazil’s biggest urban center, people from every corner of our country come here which makes for a thriving Gastronomic scene.
You’ll easily be able to have great ‘Prato Feito’ options, which I consider the national dish of Brazil, international cuisine options, or traditional Brazilian dishes from each region. All you have to do is find an address and then hop on the subway, or if you get as tired as I do after exploring all day long, order some food. This is a national food delivery app you have to download since it’s the only one that works properly.
Always prefer to get food, even if it’s just a small side dish, in nice-looking places. Food safety is super important to guarantee your trip is always smooth sailing. Even adventure has a limit!
