Colonization and European influence

In the 16th century, Portuguese colonizers explored the region, initially attracted by the extraction of Brazilwood. Later, they turned the area into a strategic point for whale hunting. The fat from the whales was used to make oil for lighting, while the frames, structures installed for processing, gave rise to the city’s name.
